Towner’s Open exhibition brings together the best artists from across the Sussex Region. Featuring painting, photography, drawing, film, ceramics and sculpture, Sussex Open 2017 offers a unique opportunity to view works by artists at every level of their career, from new talent to established figures. Artists who have previously exhibited work in our Open exhibition have gone on to be selected for John Moore’s Painting Prize, the Jerwood Drawing Prize, the BFI Film Festival in the experimental film category and have been shortlisted for the Mark Tanner Sculpture Prize. ABOUT THE SELECTORS

Richard Billingham
Richard Billingham is a British photographer and film maker. In 2001, he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize for his solo show at Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. In 2015 he had a solo exhibition at Towner featuring his panoramic photographs and video work that explored the British countryside, from the South Downs to the Norfolk Fen and Constable’s Country in the East of England. Billingham holds professorships at the University of Gloucestershire and Middlesex University.

Rosie Cooper
Rosie Cooper is Head of Exhibitions at the De La Warr Pavilion. Before that, she was Head of Programmes at Liverpool Biennial, presenting new commissions by 44 international artists across 21 sites in 2016. She was commissioning editor of the exhibition’s accompanying book, The Two-Sided Lake (Liverpool University Press, 2016), and for the 2014 edition, she curated the exhibition on James McNeil Whistler with Mai Abu ElDahab. From 2009-11 she curated Barbican Art Gallery’s public programme. With William Cobbing, she organised Bob Jubile, a series of events, displays and publications exploring the legacy of poet, pedagogue and organiser Bob Cobbing, culminating in Boooook (Occasional Papers, 2015). With Ariella Yedgar, she curates www.outoffocus.biz.

Brian Cass
Brian Cass is Head of Exhibitions at Towner. Before joining Towner he was Curator for Creative Arts,Trinity College Dublin. He was previously responsible for managing the Turner Prize and bringing it in Derry in 2013. He held curator and projects manager roles with the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, leading on projects such as Changing States: Contemporary Irish Art and the Francis Bacon Studio (2013); Time out of Mind: Works from the IMMA Collection (2012); The Moderns: The Arts in Ireland from the 1900s to the 1970s (2010); Anne Tallentire: this and other things 1999-2010 (2010); Philippe Parreno: November (2009) and James Coleman (2008). He has written and edited for exhibition catalogues and artist books, and directed and produced for film and television.
